2. “Listen, what I said before, John… I meant it.”
— “The Hounds of Baskerville”I fell for this moment right off, which is rare; usually my appreciation for a scene happens in retrospect. But however fumbling and awkward this moment can be, however much it’s disproven in the next episode, where we realize Sherlock has more than just one friend, it never fails to move me.
John puts up with a lot from Sherlock. Perhaps the one thing he knows reliably about his flatmate is that, well, he can be an “annoying dick,” as he puts it. Sherlock is not one for displays of emotion—of any kind—but Series 2 is where we start seeing him break down. He is genuinely sorry to have offended Molly in “A Scandal in Belgravia”. And in “The Hounds of Baskerville”, Sherlock gets scared. He feels doubt. He can no longer trust his own senses, or so he thinks, and because of that, he lashes out at John.
John has every reason to be annoyed; his loyalty to Sherlock has been unfailing. And Sherlock recognizes that here, and gives another sincere apology, just as he did to Molly. Perhaps he doesn’t say it outright, but he is sorry, and the sentiment is there—that he considers John to be the one and only person he can truly rely on, the only person he considers a friend. In “The Reichenbach Fall”, when Moriarty tells Sherlock his friends will die if Sherlock doesn’t do what he asks, Sherlock’s immediate response is “John…” What surprises me about this moment and that one is that John is the one he’s known the shortest amount of time, out of him, Mrs. Hudson, and Lestrade. He’s known John for only eighteen months, he is a man in perhaps his early thirties, and yet John is the only person he considers his friend.
This isn’t a grand gesture of affection, it’s not an outright declaration of love, but it’s as close as Sherlock Holmes is ever going to get. It’s fumbling and awkward and as apologetic as he can muster, and it’s endearing. You can’t put a price on that.
